Before you take a Shiraz German Shepherd home, we’ve done our best to make sure your puppy grows into a wonderful dog. Our puppies are held, touched, and socialized every day. They play inside and outdoors, and get acquainted with a crate.
Our regular veterinarian examines every puppy and gives them their first round of canine vaccinations. And each pup is microchipped to identify them if they’re lost.
The rest is up to you! German Shepherd puppies are incredible animals: smart, athletic, funny, and full of energy. Because of this, they need to be trained, socialized, and kept healthy.
We’ve put together a complete guide for caring for your puppy, which you can download here. But if you’re just browsing, this page contains some some of the most important information.

Sleep
German Shepherd puppies need 18 to 20 hours of sleep every day to support rapid growth and brain development.
Keep a consistent eat–potty–play–sleep routine, use daytime crate naps to prevent over-tiredness, and make the nighttime sleep area quiet and dim to build healthy long-term sleep habits.
Health
Schedule a veterinary visit soon after bringing your puppy home to plan vaccinations, flea/tick control, and heartworm prevention.
Your dog must receive vaccinations for rabies, Bordetella, canine influenza, Parvovirus, canine distemper, and adenovirus
Housebreaking
Housebreaking takes patience. Puppies need to relieve themselves often, so take them outside 10–15 minutes after each meal, after naps, after eating, and after leaving the crate.
To prevent accidents, use a crate or confine your puppy to a small, easy-to-clean area. If your puppy begins to soil indoors, firmly say “No”, and immediately take them to the outside potty area. When the puppy goes in the correct place, praise with positive reinforcement.
Crate training
Crate training is important for housebreaking and for your puppy’s safety. The goal is to help your pup feel “at home” in the crate.
Start by placing treats in the crate and staying close. Feed your pup in the crate, and gradually increase time in the crate as they feel more comfortable. Eventually, the crate will become your pup’s “go to” place to relax and calm down.
Never put your pup in the crate as punishment.
