Exercise guidelines for your GSD puppy
German Shepherd puppies are full of energy, but it’s essential to exercise them correctly as they grow. While they need physical activity to develop strong muscles and bones, overdoing it can cause joint problems later in life. Their joints are still developing, so too much intense exercise –especially high-impact activities – can put unnecessary stress on their bodies. It's crucial to follow age-appropriate exercise guides to ensure you're not pushing them too hard, too soon.
Mental exercise is just as important as physical activity, if not more so. GSDs are incredibly intelligent and need mental stimulation to keep them engaged. Training, puzzle games, and problem-solving tasks can tire them out just as much as physical play, helping prevent boredom and promoting good behavior.
The American Kennel Club has put together a great overview of mental and physical exercises for puppies, which you can find here. And our friends at Freedom Service Dogs of America published this detailed exercise chart.
Proper exercise for GSD pups is about finding the right balance. By following exercise guidelines and providing both physical and mental challenges, you’ll support their healthy growth and development while keeping them happy and well-adjusted.
